Micah: A People of Justice and Mercy

What exactly is God doing in the world? Or, more specifically, what is God calling His people to do in the world? No doubt, there is a mandate that flows from Christ himself, that we are to love God supremely and love our neighbor as ourselves. How, though, is love to our neighbor articulated as it flows from our love of God? The prophet Micah wrote to Israel as one of God’s messengers to deal with the tough question of “how.” But Micah is not just a homework assignment telling us to “do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God” (Micah 6:8). Stephen Um says this: "The message for us is not simply a call to action to do good. God wants us to know the reason and the need for doing good—for his glory and for the flourishing of his creation—and to find the power to do it. Micah tells us that the sin of injustice is real, and that judgment is inevitable, but hope of restoration is coming.” As we think about being the church in the world, we will consider the prophet Micah, the power of the Gospel, and the place that God has called us to embody this good news.
