Practicing Prayer with the Psalms

The Psalms are called the gymnasium of the soul. They stretch us, prod us, and force us to contend with a world that will one day come in the midst of a world that presently is. They give honest voice to our adoration, praise, glory, lament, confession, and sorrow. The Psalms teach us by modeling for us. So this summer, we are going to learn to pray with the Psalms. We will see how they can give vitality and shape to our communion with God, because they, like a good coach or trainer, take us to places that we would ordinarily not go in order to produce in us what is only a work of God’s grace.
